A press conference and open house was held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 for media and local governmental officials to show off Phase I of a three-phase project to upgrade the Sommerheim Water Treatment Plant, as well as announce the selection of membrane technology as the preferred method of filtration for the Phase II portion of this project.
Phase I included the installation of new pumps, motors, electrical gear and piping in the pump station section of the facility.
Also announced at the press conference by Mayor Joe Sinnott is the renaming of the Sommerheim Water Treatment Plant to the “Richard S. Wasielewski Water Treatment Plant”, in honor of his longtime service to the Erie Water Works. “Dick’s intrinsic knowledge, understanding and dedication to the citizens of Northwestern Pennsylvania has resulted in quality drinking water for people throughout this region”, read the proclamation signed by the mayor.
