Hear the Experts
"More than 50 years of research have proven that water fluoridation is safe, effective, and an ideal public health measure. It benefits individuals of all ages and is needed across the life span. In fact, the CDC has named fluoridation as one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. It's important to reiterate that the preponderance of scientific evidence have consistently shown that water fluoridation is safe and effective."

Dr. William Maas,
Director for Oral Health CDC and Prevention, Atlanta
"We surveyed 173 dentists in our area. We wanted to know how every dentist felt about this issue. If there was a concern about water fluoridation we wanted to hear it from the medical experts. After all, these are the ones that people trust with their families' dental health. And what we found was 100% of the dentists who responded, right here in our community, were in favor of water fluoridation."

Dr. Marian Wolford,
President of the Erie County Dental Association
"The report indicates that there are a large number of children in northwest Pennsylvania, particularly the Erie area, with untreated tooth decay. Fluoridated water is a safe and effective way to improve our children's dental health and help reverse these trends."

Dr. Robert Muscalus,
Pennsylvania Physician General
"Fluoridation is the most studied public health measure in American medical history. To my knowledge there is no solid scientific evidence that properly fluoridated water contributes to any disease known to man."

Dr. Joseph Kohler III,
Co-Chair Citizens for Better Health, Erie
"Having gone to school in Syracuse and working in the clinic there, their water has been fluoridated since the early 1960s...just a lot lower amount of decay is seen in those children as compared to a lot of the Erie children I've seen at our office. It's easy to pick out the people who have lived in areas that the water has been fluoridated. A noticeable decrease in the amount of decay that they have and any fillings they do have are quite a bit smaller."

Elise Dahlstrand,
Dental Hygienist
"Safety standards are established by the Environmental Protection Agency at four parts fluoride per million parts of water. Erie will be operating at one-quarter that amount, 75% less, by using one part fluoride per million parts of water. To ensure it remains that way, we have several safeguards in place, from operator manual checks, to continuous computerized monitoring, to an automatic shutdown at any program deviation."

James Rudy,
Former Chief Operating Officer Erie Water Works
